When Porsche unveiled the Mission E concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, everyone was shocked by the idea of an all-electric Porsche sports car. Now that we’ve driven the 2020 Taycan, it’s delivers the performance, style and manufacturing precision you’d expect from this brand. The Taycan is likely to be an electric car, but it feels like a real Porsche at first.
Taycan’s exterior look – bold and simple as it is – certainly makes a statement. It’s also quite clearly a Porsche. This C-pillar profile could be from a 911.

Porsche Taycan overview
Porsche’s first electric car was a stylish sports car whose outstanding performance matched the brand’s reputation. The 2020 Porsche Taycan (pronounced taycan) offers incredible acceleration, precise handling and aggressive styling. There are some more interesting projects under the skin. The Taycan is the first electric vehicle to use a two-speed gearbox and an 800-volt electrical system, which provide faster acceleration and shorter charging times, respectively. The Porsche’s priority is performance above all else, with interior space as a secondary concern.
Motor System
The Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S use two electric motors to drive all four wheels. Peak power of 522 horsepower (4S with base battery), 563 horsepower (4S with larger battery), 670 horsepower (Turbo) and 750 horsepower (Turbo S) lasts just 2.5 seconds at a time. After that, all models will have a slightly reduced power to protect the transmission from heat. During normal driving, shifting of the unique two-speed gearbox of the rear motor is almost imperceptible. But when the launch control system is activated, the Porsche will shift between one and two gears as quickly and rigidly as any gasoline sports car.
In test, the Turbo S hit 100 km / h in 2.4 seconds, making it the fastest electric car we’ve ever tested and the third fastest car in test history. (For Lamborghini Huracán Performante and Porsche 918 Spyder.) We have not tested the Turbo or 4S, but we assume they should be tested in 3.0 seconds and 3.8 seconds, respectively. As the battery runs out, the vehicle’s speed will slow down, but Porsche said the Taycan will be able to do 10 starts in a row and performance will remain stable.
Charging and battery
Charging time for a Porsche Taycan:
Charging method | Typically found at | Charging time* | Range/hour** |
---|---|---|---|
Empty to full: | |||
3-pin plug | Home | 35 h | 7 km/h |
3.7kW | Home / Work | 22 h | 11 km/h |
7kW | Home / Work / Public Locations | 12 h | 20 km/h |
20%-80%: | |||
50kW | Public Locations | 60 min | 71 km/30 min |
150kW | Public Locations | 20 min | 214 km/30 min |
* Based on Pod Point estimates, charging rates can differ based on the ambient temperature, the state of the battery (e.g. empty or half full) and variation in charging rate.
** Range per hour is the number of miles you can expect to get from an hour of charging at the relevant rate.
You can charge Porsche Taycan using the Type 2 plug at home, work or public charging areas. There is also a CCS connector for fast charging.
Battery:
Battery size – 79.2 kWh
Usable battery (Pod Point estimate) – 75 kWh
Official battery efficiency (WLTP) – 335 Wh/mile
Official battery efficiency (NEDC) – N/A
Battery efficiency (Pod Point estimate) – 350 Wh/mile
Interior
The Taycan’s touchscreen interface works well, but not perfect. The lower touchscreen mainly controls the climate, but can be used to navigate the upper touchscreen with its virtual touchpad. Like other touchscreens, the Taycan is prone to smudges, although they only appear when the system is off. If you are not ready to learn something new, you will probably hate this interface.
Getting in and out of the Taycan can be tricky if you haven’t raised the air suspension to its maximum comfort. Otherwise, the process will be very similar to getting in and out of a low-slung sports car. The rear roofline is also slightly lowered, so watch your head. Once inside, there’s plenty of room in front, but the two-seater rear seat isn’t enough for such a long car, and the lack of toe space under the front seats makes it cramped.
Rear visibility is excellent and front view is even better. The windshield pillars are thin in the right places, and the door mirrors ensure objects don’t get covered when turning. One drawback is the rear view camera. Its wide fisheye perspective is highly distorted, making it difficult to judge your proximity to what’s behind.
Exterior
The exterior styling is interesting. I’ve never been a Porsche acolyte blindly professing all things Porsche to be perfect. I don’t like the look of the Panamera, and I never have. I do think there are elements of Porsche design that can fairly be targeted.
Price
The much-anticipated Porsche Taycan is now on sale in Australia from $191,000 plus on-road costs for the entry-level 4S, with the electric vehicle completing the 0-100 dash in a claimed 4 seconds flat – 0.2 seconds faster than the equivalent 911.
The middle-of-the-range Porsche Taycan Turbo has a big step up in power and price, with $269,100 plus on-road costs buying a claimed 0-100 time of just 3.2 seconds from 460kW, and up-to 500kW on overboost.
But the crowning glory belongs to the flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S, boasting the best claimed 0-100 time of 2.8 seconds – just 0.3 seconds off a Bugatti Chiron. Those seeking bragging rights will need to pay $339,100 plus on-road costs.
