The Nissan Ariya will make its debut this year in Japan as a 2021 model. Somewhere next year it will reach us as a 2022 product.
The 2022 Nissan Ariya electric SUV unveiled as a world premiere.
The Ariya, remains largely unknown to the general public, but rest assured that that will change. For Nissan, it represents an important step in its development process. Pierre Loing, global vice president of product planning. Said at the Canadian portion of the presentation that Ariya was the “start of the next chapter for Nissan”.
What is Nissan Ariya?
The Ariya is the brand’s first all-electric utility vehicle. The latter will debut as a 2021 model in Japan, then cross the Atlantic to reach us somewhere in the next year as a 2022 product.
It had been presented at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2019 as a concept vehicle. Although an emulator of the latter had shown up as the IMx at the same event two years earlier. So he’s been in the plans for a long time. More than just an electric vehicle, it represents Nissan’s new electric identity. In addition to incorporating a host of future technologies that will mark the next decade.
Capabilities
Built on a new platform developed by the alliance (Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi). The Ariya will come in two and four-wheel drive configurations, the latter offering four trim levels. Two battery capacities will be offered, 63 kWh and 87 kWh. So the buyer can go there with his needs in terms of autonomy, depending on the type of trips he is used to taking. The maximum capacity is estimated at 482 kilometers by Nissan, but we will have to see what will be reserved for us and what will hold for each version of the model when it is about to come to us.
As for the all-wheel drive system, we will have to integrate the name e-4ORCE into our vocabulary, which represents all-electric technology that will allow the vehicle to operate in all directions. And the latter goes beyond just providing traction. It optimizes torque distribution to the front or rear depending on road conditions, in addition to controlling the independent braking of each wheel when cornering, for example, to provide maximum traction to the vehicle.
Conceptually, the positioning of the battery in the floor allows perfect weight distribution (50/50) and adds stability in any driving situation. The Ariya will also benefit from e-Pedal technology which allows you to accelerate and decelerate simply by using the accelerator pedal. Releasing the latter actually initiates a regeneration operation which has the effect of slowing down the vehicle.
The inside of Nissan Ariya
Finally, on board, again, the electric nature of the Ariya allowed stylists to maximize the space available to occupants. This is true at the rear where the presence of a flat floor has an incredible effect on clearance. Up front, we could even put the air conditioning system in the engine bay rather than under the dashboard, freeing up valuable space. This translates into an unusually uncluttered space for those seated in the front.
As for the presentation, it’s kept as simple as possible and really shows us what the future will look like aboard the brand’s products. And with the autonomous driving functions that will take up more and more space (the Ariya will of course benefit from the ProPilot Assist system), we first wanted to create a zen environment where it will be good to relax.
And let’s not forget the connectivity, at the heart of the experience that will be lived on board. We are of course talking about connections known as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but also about a symbiosis with Alexa and connected services that will allow a host of online updates of the car’s systems.
