The Tesla Model S is an all-electric executive saloon that combines amazing performance with zero tailpipe emissions, a luxurious, high-tech cabin and tremendous refinement.
Overview
Tesla’s Model S sedan was the first mass-market car to prove that electric vehicles could be fun-to-drive, eco-friendly, viable as everyday transportation, and even useable for long trips. The Model S does all that even better for 2021. Depending on which trim you choose, the Model S can travel between 390 (627 km) and 520 miles (836 km) on just one charge and deliver blistering acceleration performance that rivals some of the world’s best supercars.
Tesla now sells more practical and more affordable models such as the Model Y SUV and the Model 3 sedan, but the Model S remains the flagship of the brand. Its interior is spacious for four adults but doesn’t live up to the luxury price tag. With increased pressure from rivals such as the Porsche Taycan and the upcoming Lucid Air, the Model S is no longer in a class of one, but for some buyers the car’s athletic chassis, Ludicrous driving mode, and exceptional range are enough to sell them on the Tesla EV lifestyle.
Motor System
Every Model S comes with a 100kWh battery pack and a pair of electric motors. You can pick from a Long Range model – that Tesla claims can manage 379 miles (610 km) between charges – and a Performance version that loses out on a few miles of range
Charging
Equally rapid is how quickly you can charge the electric Tesla Model S using one of Tesla’s ‘Supercharger’ public charging points. These 75kW and 120kW units will charge the Model S’ batteries from 0-80% in 65 and 42 minutes respectively. If you use a wall-mounted home charger, however, you can expect a full charge to take around 14 hours while using a conventional three-pin household plug will take almost a day and a half.
Interior
On tap for 2021 is an updated interior. The original vertical screen orientation in the Model S is no more: The 2021 features a horizontally oriented touchscreen, which is the style Tesla implemented on its Model 3 and Y. There’s also an additional dash-mounted driver information display above the steering wheel and an entertainment display for rear passengers. A new steering wheel design is also raising some eyebrows — it’s styled to look like an aircraft’s flight yoke or, perhaps more whimsically, the twin-grip design from Knight Rider’s KITT. It’s unclear whether this design is fully approved for production, however.
Technology
Part of what made the Model S so distinctive upon its debut was its 17.0-inch ( 43 cm) touchscreen infotainment system, a setup that still stands out in the market today. Although it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, its user interface is easier to use than most.

Price
The 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus, which is the base model, starts at $79,990. That makes it one of the highest-priced luxury hybrid and electric cars, second only to the Porsche Taycan. The 2021 Model S Performance starts at $99,990.
