Following the launch of its first all-electric car in 2019, the EQC SUV, Mercedes-Benz is planning a new entry-level Mercedes-Benz EQA car.
Overview
The EQA is a new all-electric model from Mercedes-Benz that will be similar in size and shape to the GLA-class crossover. It’s part of the company’s EQ subbrand that focuses on electric vehicles and is slated to go into production late this year. Mercedes has only released photos of a camouflaged prototype so far, but we can tell that its body is almost identical to the new GLA, meaning it will be a subcompact SUV likely with five seats. Power will come from an electric motor, which will source its juice from a battery pack mounted under the floor of the vehicle.
Motor System
Due to its size, the Mercedes-Benz EQA will be based on a modified version of the platform currently used by the A-Class hatchback and GLA crossover. Despite having roots as a platform for combustion-engined cars, the underpinnings offer some flexibility, allowing Mercedes to fit an electric motor on each axle and up to a 60kWh battery pack along the chassis’ spine.
The electric powertrain’s total system output will vary depending on the size of the battery installed (which will also affect the EQA’s price), but Mercedes says the most powerful version will have more than 268bhp. There’ll also be more than 500Nm of torque available, which should give the crossover a 0–62mph of around five seconds.
Mercedes claims the EQA will have a real-world range of around 250 miles (402 km) between charges. What’s more, the German company has previously stated that all of its future electric models will feature rapid-charging technology, which will allow 60 miles (69 km) of range to be added in just 10 minutes.
Charging and battery
Home and Destination Charging (0 -> 100%)
Charging an EV in Europe differs by country. Some European countries primarily use 1-phase connections to the grid, while other countries are almost exclusively using a 3-phase connection. The table below shows all possible ways the Mercedes EQA can be charged, but some modes of charging might not be widely available in certain countries.
Fast Charging (10 -> 80%)
Charging power will decrease significantly after 80% state-of-charge has been reached. A typical rapid charge therefore rarely exceeds 80% SoC. The rapid charge rate of an EV depends on the charger used and the maximum charging power the EV can handle. The table below shows all details for rapid charging the Mercedes EQA.
Mercedes has not released details about rapid charging the EQA. The information below is based on estimated values of the most likely rapid charging capabilities.

Exterior
The Mercedes-Benz EQA’s interior is likely to be arranged similarly to the GLA’s. That should mean five seats with a reasonable amount of cargo space inside the rear hatch. Because it’s an electric vehicle, the EQA might have some EV-specific displays and gauges. If the regular GLA-class’s cabin is anything to go by, we expect high-class materials coupled with modern design elements. It might give up a bit of cargo space or rear-seat passenger space compared with the GLA due to the packaging of the battery, and we’ll know more when we can get our hands on an EQA for our practical space testing.
Price
Mercedes has confirmed that it will reveal the new EQA on 20th of January 2021 – it should go on sale before 2022. As a more upmarket competitor to the VW ID.3, you can expect the price to be a smidge steeper. It’ll most likely cost more than £40,000 when it arrives, possibly rising over £50,000.
