“Sony Honda Mobility” is an example of the era of car electronics companies is becoming a reality. While the origins of Apple’s car are still unclear at the moment, Japanese tech giant Sony is forging ahead with the help of Japanese car company Honda.
Honda and Sony announced plans to establish a joint venture “Sony Honda Mobility” to produce electric cars. The two companies now agree that the joint venture will do better than an independent, separate company.
“We share the view that it is better to make the joint venture independent in the long run than to give it to Sony or Honda.”
Sony President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.
While Yoshida has mentioned that the joint venture may have an IPO, Sony’s CEO has yet to disclose any information about the plan. The sale of the shares would confirm the plan to become an independent company.
“Sony Honda Mobility” should develop and sell these brand new cars by the end of 2025. Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the vehicle at one of its factories. On the other hand, Sony will develop and provide a platform for the car manufacturer. It is unclear whether the future Honda-Sony EV will be integrate into the Vision-S concepts.
