In the all-electric SUV segment things are always intriguing and this time Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the groundbreaking EQC SUV. This brand new version actually carries a lot of features from the existing GLC-class SUV with major changes from the body to powertrain, making it a car suited for a cleaner, greener future. The perks don’t end there as the cabin breathes in a refreshing and minimalistic approach.
Overview
As more and more automakers offer electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is starting to compete with the 2021 EQC. The EQC is a compact, five-seater SUV that is similar in many respects to the GLC gasoline class body. Its all-electric drivetrain delivers the quiet operation and sharp acceleration found in many luxury EVs. Its interior looks good, with glossy plastic, fabric and modern design. Although final EPA figures have yet to be released, preliminary estimates put the SUV’s cruising range at around 200 miles (320 km.), lower than its Tesla-branded competitors. Overall, the combination of Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles and eco-friendly electrification products in the EQC makes it an attractive choice for eco-friendly luxury SUV buyers.
Motor System
The EQC connects two electric motors with lithium-ion batteries. The single-speed, direct-drive transmission sends power to all four wheels. The drivetrain can deliver a total power of 402 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. We haven’t tested the EQC, but Mercedes-Benz estimates it will go from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds. This makes its main competitor, Tesla Model X, lag behind Tesla in this market segment. Tesla claims the acceleration time from zero to 100 km / h is 4.4 seconds for long-distance models and 2.7 seconds for high-performance models with ridiculous mode enabled. Like many cars with the Mercedes-Benz logo, the EQC skillfully combines sportiness and comfort. It can drive smoothly on rough and uneven roads. At the same time, its handling is high enough to make your daily commute to work interesting.
Charging and battery
The EPA hasn’t announced its estimates regarding the EQC’s driving range, but we expect this figure to land at 200 miles (320 km.) or less. That puts it well behind the Tesla Model X, which can travel for more than 300 miles (480 km.) on a single charge. When charging at home, Mercedes claims that the EQC recharges from 10 percent to 100 percent in 10 hours. With the standard DC fast-charger in use, going from a 10-percent charge to an 80-percent charge takes 40 minutes.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t released mileage estimates for the EQC. We’re expecting these figures to come in at around 80/70 MPGe city/highway.
Interior
The interiors of the 2021 EQC have been made to look futuristic while staying true to the Mercedes ethos. The interior resembles a lot of the ones in normal cars, unlike Tesla Model X’s interior which is dominated by a screen. The minimalistic approach is what helps this Merc stand apart from the rest of its stablemates as well as the competition. Tesla also implements a similar design language, but it lacks the drama that Merc has managed to instill in the EQC.
