The next production model from Cupra – Seat’s now-separate performance brand – will be a sporting version of the El-Born electric hatchback. 2021 Cupra El-Born is VW Group’s first EV.
We have taken the original concept to the next level creating a new sporty and dynamic design and reengineering the technological content. The el-Born is the living proof that performance and electrification are a great match.

Overview
While the Cupra el-Born’s stubby nose and sharp creases down the side look similar to the Volkswagen ID.3 (the car on which it’s based), Cupra has added some bolder styling cues in the form of different headlights and a sportier front bumper.
The new el-Born comes with copper accents on its alloy wheels and bumpers. However, if cars such as the Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor are anything to go by, you’ll likely be able to spec more subtle colour combos if you prefer.
Motor system
While the maximum battery size for SEAT-badged cars is 62kWh, the Cupra el-Born has an 82kWh battery. It’ll be shared with the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron and the Skoda Enyaq. Cupra promises a range of up to 310 miles (499 km) on a full charge. From zero to 31mph (50 km/h) takes 2.9 seconds. And expecting 0-62mph (100 km/h) to be dealt with in just over six seconds.
The Cupra el-Born will be rear-wheel drive. The same setup in the Skoda Enyaq features a 201bhp electric motor. Fast-charging at a public charger will add around 160 miles (257 km) of range in half an hour.
Cupra el-Born charging
Plug the new el-Born electric car into a 100kW charging point. And you can add up to 161 miles (259 km) worth of charge to the batteries in as little as 30 minutes. You’ll probably still need to plug it in overnight to get a full charge from an 11kW wall box at home, however.
Charging the Cupra El Born will take about 12 hours when using a 7.4kW home charge point, although it can charge faster at 11kW AC if you have access to a three-phase charge point and supply at home (though this is rare in the UK). It also has CCS rapid charging. So if you connect to a public rapid charger you can expect an 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes.
Interior and equipment
Like all of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB vehicles. The Cupra el-Born has a long wheelbase relative to its overall length – which should allow it to deliver the interior space of a car from the class above. As such, boot space should be on par with the SEAT Leon. But there should be more legroom for rear seat passengers.
The Cupra el-Born’s cabin will be both modern and functional, with a digital instrument binnacle, a floating 10-inch (25 cm) infotainment screen and touch-sensitive controls for the car’s heating and ventilation system. Buyers will also get a pair of bucket seats and a new sports steering wheel.
2021 Cupra el-Born prices
The Cupra el-Born will be more expensive than the similarly sized Cupra Leon hatchback, because the technology associated with electric cars is costly. Expect, that the prices will be around €45,000, which is a similar figure to the powerful Cupra Ateca and Cupra Formentor SUVs. The el-Born will offer vastly lower running costs, however.
Competitor
Have you ever heard of JAC iEV7S? I’m sure you did. But really, this is a family electric SUV from one of the best manufacturers in China. It is not yet popular in EU, but soon it will be. Why? Because with technical speciffics JAC iEV7S is as good as Kia e-Niro, maybe better.
350km of range, the newest technology, safety and the price. Yes, price is the best part of JAC iEV7S. Why to buy expensive Japanese Brand when you can have a quality for affordable price?
